'The head of a chief of New Zealand, the face curiously tataow'd or marked according to their manner.' Engraving, 1784. Following on from the European discovery by Abel Tasman in 1642 then the visit by James Cook in 1769, pictures such as these, published in France in 1772 after the visit of Marion du Fresne, caused much curiosity about New Zealand throughout Europe.
