THE TREATY OF WAITANGI. Sheet 1. The Treaty in Maori. Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The final draft of the Treaty in English was completed on 4 February 1840 then overnight Rev. Henry Williams and his son translated it into Māori. This Māori translation, along with the English final draft, was presented at the first Treaty meeting the next day. After the meeting, the missionary Richard Taylor copied the translation onto this parchment. The following day, 6 February, this, the first Treaty sheet, was signed by 43 Māori chiefs at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands in Northland. By the end of July 1840, an extra 197 Māori signatures, from meetings at eight more locations (as well as at Waitangi again) had been fixed to this sheet. Original on parchment.
